LOG-BOOK OF H.M.S. 'DIAMOND' (Capt. Alfred Taylor Dale, R.N.) on the Australian station; 22 Mar. 1882-16 Apr. 1884. Fair copy, imperfect apparently at the beginning, now commencing shortly before the ship's arrival at Fremantle from Simon's Bay, South Africa, and recording her voyage thence to Sydney, from which base she made a series of cruises to New Caledonia, New Hebrides, the Solomon Islands, the Fiji Islands, Samoa, Tasmania, New Zealand, New Ireland, New Britain, and New Guinea. Paper; ff. iii + 155. Folio. 1882-1884. Among the insertions are fourteen neatly drawn charts of the ship's course (ff. 2-142 passim) and six watercolour sketches of places visited by the 'Diamond' in the South Pacific (ff. 20, 24, 42, 118, 126). Three insertions after ff. 22, 114 and 148 are now wanting. Belonged after 31 Aug. 1912 (see f. ii) to Harry Geoffrey Beasley, F.R.A.I. (d. 1939). Transferred from the Department of Printed Books.
