GRAVES PAPERS. Papers of Henry Graves & Co., printsellers and publishers, of 6 Pall Mall, London, comprising signed memoranda of agreements with painters and engravers, and some related correspondence and receipts; 1827-1885. During the period covered by the collection, the firm passed under the successive styles of Moon Boys & Graves (1827-1834), Hodgson & Graves (1836-1841), Graves & Warmsley (1841-1843) and Henry Graves & Co. In the index to the present Catalogue, which includes the names of the writers of letters, signatories of agreements, etc., the final form has for convenience been adopted as the norm. The original nucleus of the collection was a bound quarto volume containing signed memoranda of agreements 1836-1843, not always entered in strict order of date, and prefaced by an index of names, into which the remaining papers had been loosely inserted. This volume has now been broken up and rearranged chronologically (ff. 50-191 passim, with the index of names as ff. 1-10), and the inserted papers bound in, in their appropriate places. Also included in the collection is a receipt from Thomas Holloway & Co. to James Gibbons, Esq., for a subscription to their engravings of the Raphael cartoons at Hampton Court, 1811 (f. 11). Paper; ff. ii + 295. Folio. 1811-1885. Bookplate of Algernon Graves, F.S.A., son of Henry Graves, and a subsequent head of the firm, f. ii. Bought at the sale of his library at Christie's, 8-9 June 1922, lot 326, by Cecil Reginald Grundy (bookplate, f. i). Presented in the latter's memory by his daughter, Mrs Eleanor Beatrice Roe.
