Title:

ROYAL ACADEMY LECTURES by Joseph Mallord William Turner, R.A., as Professor of Perspective and Geometry, a post to which he was elected 10 Dec. 1807 and which he resigned 10 Feb. 1838 (see A. J. Finberg, Life of Turner, 1939; 2nd ed. 1961, pp. 138, 369). By the terms of office an annual course of six public lectures was obligatory and the present material consists mainly of the script of these lectures in various stages, draft and copy, mostly undated except by watermark (cited as wm), much overlaid with additions and alterations in the process of frequent repetition (see D. S. MacColl, 'Turner's Lectures at the Academy', The Burlington Magazine, xii, 1907-1908, pp. 343-346). Two main sets of lectures can be distinguished, the primary and more general series, for which in 1818 several new lectures were written, and a more strictly mathematical and specialized series, evidently meant rather for professed students. Several of the items were on loan to the National Gallery of British Art (Tate Gallery), 1907-1918, and B, C, and F bear labels to that effect. Twenty-eight volumes. Paper. Folio. 1806-1902.
