- Title:
- John Skelton, The Tunnyng of Elynour Rummyng; rule-book for the Esquire Youths, a society of bell-ringers
- Scope & Content:
-
This manuscript contains an attempted facsimile of an early printed edition of The Tunnyng of Elynour Rummyng, by the English poet John Skelton (b. c. 1463, d. 1529). The satirical poem concerns the eponymous Elynour, the owner of a pub in southern England. It is written in a style known as 'Skeltonic verse' after the poet, with dimetric and trimetric phrasings. The poem may have been based on an actual woman, Alianora Romyng, an ale-wife at the Running Horse in Leatherhead, Surrey, who was fined for overcharging for her brew.
The volume also contains a rule-book for the 'Esquire Youths', a society of bell ringers founded by the English lawyer, topographer and antiquarian Sir Henry Chauncy (b. 1632, d. 1719), dated 1662-1663.
Contents:
ff. 1r-11v: John Skelton, The Tunnyng of Elynour Rummyng, written in English and Latin, beginning, 'Tell you I chyll'.
ff. 12v-24v: Rule-book for the 'Esquire Youths', a society of bell ringers, followed by a list of officers and members of the society in 1662, and an additional regulation for the year 1663, written in English and Latin. The text is reversed and written upside down in the volume, the rule-book running from ff. 24v-17r, the list of officers and members from 16v-13v, and the 1663 regulation appearing on f. 12v.
ff. 12r, 13r, 14r, 15r and 16r are blank.
