Provenance:
Juan (or Joan) de Casanova (b. 1387, d. 1436), Dominican, Bishop of Bosa (Sardinia) and Elne, Cardinal from 1431, confessor of Alfonso V, King of Aragon, commissioned by him in 1436 for Alfonso V, at the workshop of Domingo Crespí, Valencia; the unfinished book was recovered from Crespí by Joan Mercader, Baile General de Valencia, on 19 October 1437 upon a payment of 62 Florins, as registered in the Mestre Racional, the royal accounts of the Crown of Aragon (Archivo del Reino de Valencia, no 45, f. 684).
Leonardo Crespí (fl. 1324-1359), illuminator, son of Domingo Crespí: contracted on 6 June 1439 to finish the Book of Hours for Alfonso V (Archivo del Reino de Valencia, Bailia, Libro 45, f. 798v) and received payments for the contracted work on 30 October 1439 (Archivo del Reino de Valencia, Mestre Racional, no. 54, f. 311v), 27 January 1442, 20 March 1442 and 9 November (Archivo del Reino de Valencia, Bailia, Libro 46, ff. 128, 141, 201); on 9 November 1442 Crespi promised to finish the work by 25 December (Archivo del Reino de Valencia, Protocolo Desconocido, no. 11250, f. 4v) and on 16 April 1443 received a payment for gilding the edges of the book (Archivo del Reino de Valencia, Mestre Racional, no. 58, f. 18v; for relevant excerpts of these accounts see Ramón Marqués, La illuminación, 2007, Appendix 7, nos. 272, 297, 299, 325, 327, 330, 331, 332, 338); the date 1442 is inscribed on the wall of a chapel depicted in a miniature (f. 263v).

Added prayer 'O crux venerabilis', 17th century (f. 362r).
