CHARTULARY of the church of St. Swithun of Winchester, containing:-
1. "De prima ffundatione ecclesie Sancti Swithuni Wintonie que olim dicebatur. vetus Monasterium:" a history of the church to the year 967, followed by a notice of the Bishops of Winchester to Egbald [A.D. 793]. Imperfect. f. 4.
2. "Carte et libertates Wintoniensis ecelesie," beginning with charters of Edward the Confessor and William I., and continued in the same hand to 26 Hen. III. [1242], and thence by different hands to the end of the reign, f. 10. Among the entries are:-
a. A page of a calendar with obits of monks and benefactors, f. 44. b. Agreements of confraternity with other monasteries for masses for the dead, etc., f. 44 b. c. List of crosses, plate and vestments, presented to the monastery by Henry [de Blois, ob. 1171] Bishop of Winchester; followed by "Ornamenta que dominus H. episcopus Wintoniensis ecclesie partim dedit partim redemit," f. 46 b. d. Copy of a letter addressed to a Cardinal Legate respecting visions seen by a profligate youth in Rome, while watching by night on the feast of the Assumption. Imperfect. f. 48. e. Notices of the deaths and benefactions of William [de Raleigh, A.D. 1243] and John [Gernsey, A.D. 1262], Bishops of Winchester, f. 48 b.
3. Copies of charters, agreements, etc., principally in connection with John de Pontoise, Bishop of Winchester, including, at f. 56, articles agreed upon respecting services claimed by the Bishop from the Prior and convent in 1284, and, at f. 67, a specification of tithes, pensions, and oblations of parochial clergy, etc., in 1331; l5th cent., f. 49.
4. "Consuetudines elemosine ecclesie S. Petri et S. Swithuni Wintonie;" f. 72 b.
5. "De administratione Prioris;" f. 75.
6. "De quibusdam consuetudinibus prævaricatis et a Roberto venerabili priore et ab omni conuentu reformatis;" with various other customs, f. 77. Vellum; xiiith cent., except Artt. 1, 3, which are of the xvth cent. At the beginning, and end of the volume are fragments of a book of Decretals, of the xiiith cent.; and on f. 3, is a note on the weight of the "Pista," headed "Pondus Michee Monachi ecelesic cathedralis Sancti Swithuni Wintoniensis." "Liber domini Thome Dakcombe [minor canon of Winchebter] 1550, pretio v. s." Quarto.
