Compositions by George Frederic Handel, in full score. Autograph.
- Scope & Content:
-
ff. 2-12b. Cantata, begins 'Lungi dal mio bel Nume'; for a treble voice, with a figured bass for harpsichord, in score. [By Handel.] 'Roma. Il dì 3 di Marzzo, 1708.' Autograph. No. 25 of the Händel-Gesellschaft's edition of the Cantatas. HWV 127a. At f. 8 begins a transcript of the song in a later hand, followed by a folio of empty music paper.
ff 13-38. Selection from an unperformed Opera by Handel published by Arnold as 'Alcides' and by the Händel Gesellschaft (in a more complete form) as 'Alceste.' The present MS consists of 'a Song for Miss Young,' begins 'Thetis bids me hither fly' (the last word altered into 'rise '), given in the appendix to the above-mentioned Society's edition; together with the whole of Act iv, as there published, except the chorus 'Thrice happy' and the beginning of the air 'Enjoy the sweet Elysian grove.' The symphonies and accompaniments are for trumpets, flutes, oboes, bassoons, and strings, in score. Autograph. At the end is written 'G. F. Handel...völlig geendiget, den 8 January, 1750.' Characters: Syrene (Miss Young), Charon (Walz—Handel's cook), Calliope (Mrs. Arne), Apollo (Mr. Low), etc. HWV 45. (see also Royal MSS.20.e.6).
ff. 39-48 Concerto in B?, written apparently for 2 'Concertini,' consisting of 2 horns, 2 oboes, and a bassoon each, together with a 'Concerto grosso' of strings, in score, by Handel. Autograph. The movements given here are Overture, Allegro ma non troppo (? afterwards used for the chorus 'And the glory of the Lord' in the 'Messiah'), Allegro, the end of an Alla breve moderato, and Minuet. The Lento and A tempo ordinario movements, and the beginning of the Alla breve movement in the Händel-Gesellschaft's edition (vol. 47), are supplied from Arnold's edition. HWV 32.
ff. 49-51b. Organ-part of the first movement [Overture], Allegro, Andante, L[arghetto], and march [same as in 'Judas Maccabæus '], from the organ concerto in F [by Handel.] Autograph. (See Handel-Gesellschaft's publications, vol. 48.) HWV 305a/b.
ff. 52-62. Two movements, the first unnamed, the second 'Alla Hornpipe,' for horns, oboes, bassoons, and strings, in score, by Handel. Autograph. Published by the Händel-Gesellschaft (vol. 47) as a Concerto. The date of 1715 is deduced from the fact that the whole appears (arranged for different instruments) in the 'Water Music,' which was written in 1715 or 1716. HWV 31.
