Biblical and genealogical roll chronicle from Creation to Eleazar and Judas Maccabeas
- Scope & Content:
-
Contents:
Peter of Poitiers, Compendium historiae in genealogia Christi, a biblical chronicle in roll form consisting of a series of roundels accompanied by brief biographical entries (imperfect at the end).
The genealogical descent of Christ from Adam and Eve is depicted in the central line, with series of contemporary historical figures, including Roman emperors and kings of Israel, on either side. The material is arranged in six historical periods corresponding to the traditional six ages of the world inaugurated by Adam, Noah, Abraham, David, Zedekiah, but the roll is incomplete, ending at Elezar, with the commentary ending at Judas Maccabeus, so the sixth age, beginning at the birth of Christ, is not present. The text begins, 'Beholding the length of holi scripture', a translation of the Latin, 'Considerans historiae prolixitatem', explaining that the diagrammatic chronicle is designed to help students memorise complex biblical material.
This and a number or chronicles, including Add MS 31950, Lansdowne MS 456, Harley Roll 9 and Royal MS 14 B VIII were probably copied by a single scribe working in London or Westminster but illustrated by different artists (according to Scott, Later Gothic Manuscripts (1996), who lists 21 rolls and roll-codices of this type).
The dorse of the roll is blank (dorse abbreviated as d)
Decoration:
A large initial in blue with foliate decoration and a partial foliate border in colours and gold; large roundels in gold for the Creation and key biblical figures: Noah and Abraham (membrane 1), David (membrane 3) and Sedechias (membrane 5). Diagrams in red, green and brown of 2 cross-sections of Noah's Ark (membrane 1), the 42 mansiones of the Israelites in the desert, above a circular diagram of the 12 tribes of Israel around the Ark of the Covenant (membrane 2) and a circular plan of Jerusalem (membranes 6-7). A central line of descent in red, blue and gold with small roundels in square frames in brown and green. Numerous initials in red with penwork decoration in blue.
The border is East Anglian in style, according to Scott, 'Dated and Datable Borders' (1997), p. 642.
