A Middle Dutch prayer-book

This late fifteenth-century prayer-book supplied a convent of Dominican nuns with a large number of Christocentric prayers in addition to those of the Divine Office. Many of the manuscript's Passion-centred prayers are designed to help readers travel virtually to the sites associated with the Passion (the Seven Pilgrim Churches and the Holy Land) and to earn the same indulgences that pilgrims could earn at these sites. Such prayers were especially popular among enclosed convents, such as those of Dominican nuns, since they were unable to leave their houses and undertake physical pilgrimage.
ff. 1v-2r: An instruction to pray seven hundred Aves on the feast of the Virgin Mary (purportedly revealed by herself) and daily seven Aves, according to the text, commonly performed in Bridgettine monasteries, ‘[introduction:] Item het is gemenlick in sint brigetten cloesteren Soe wie maria eygen wil syn die sal op een dach van haer hoechtiden lesen .vij. ff. 7r-8v [+ f. 197r]: An instruction by Christ to his mystical bride to adorn each letter of his name with three ‘roses’: a hitherto unidentified copy of sermon 33 of the Middle Dutch Jesus Collacien (Jesus Sermons), ‘Onse heer leert syn bruyt die minnende ziel hoe dattet behoerlic is dat si groot maect die naem hoers brudegoms Ende si haer verblyt als si hem hoert noemen Want seit hy ic bin die brudegom der maechden Soe wil ic u leeren hoe dat gi mynen naem vercieren selt elcke letter bisonder mit drie rosen [etc.]’; with diagrams in which each letter of the name ‘JHESU’ is connected to its different meanings [for an edition from another manuscript, see Jhesus collacien, ed. by A. Rudy the sequence was recited to visit virtually the Seven Pilgrim Churches in Rome: each section is dedicated to another saint whose bones are buried see Rudy, Virtual Pilgrimages (2011), pp. 178-82) .

ff. 197-206: The endings of ten items that once had printed images pasted on their now empty verso sides to juxtapose the beginnings of their following items; the folios were removed from the manuscript when the printed images were taken out and subsequently rebound at the end of the manuscript.

Decoration:
The manuscript originally included 10 printed hand-coloured engravings, some by the German printmaker and goldsmith Israhel van Meckenem (b. c. 1445, d. 1503), that were once pasted on the verso sides of ff. 197-206. The illustrations were removed at the British Museum's Prints & Drawings department and transferred to the Department of Manuscripts on 14 November 1868 [accession numbers LBMPD 1868, 1114.222-231]. They are described in Rudy, Virtual Pilgrimages (2011), pp. 399-400.

Provenance:
The prayer-book was written for a Dominican convent: several items are grammatically phrased for a woman (e.g. 'sondaerse' and 'sonderinne') and refer to religious orders. One of the prayers for the canonical hours refers to ‘our holy patron and father St Dominic [and] St Catherine of Siena’ (f. 185r: ‘onsen heiligen potroen [sic] ende vader sint Dominicus sint Katryn vander seyn’). St Catherine of Siena, a Dominican tertiary, is also referred to in the litany of saints on f. 47v. The litany refers two times to ‘Sancta Katherina’, probably once for St Catherine of Alexandria and once for St Catherine of Siena. She is also mentioned in the Golden Litany (f. 174v: ‘katryn vander seyn’), where she is the only female saint who is not an early Christian virgin martyr. Other prayers appear to highlight the Dominican order as well: in the prayer to St Sebastian and all confessors, the text addresses the ‘holy father St Dominic with all your dear children’ (f. 28v: ‘heilige vader sint Dominice mit alle u lieve kinder’); in the treatise on the foundation of indulgences, the text explains that ‘the brothers and sisters of the Order of Preachers must once read seven psalms’ (f. 57v: ‘die bruederen Ende susteren vander predicaer orden moeten lesen eens een seven psalm’) in order to earn the indulgences of the churches in Rome, whereas no prayer instructions for other religious orders are described.
Some scholars, however, have argued that the prayer-book originates from a Bridgettine monastery: according to Sander Olsen (‘Handschriften uit het Birgittijnessenklooster Mariënwater te Rosmalen' (1995), p. 232) and Stooker and Verbeij (Collecties op orde, II, pp. 358-59) the manuscript may have originated in the Bridgettine monastery of Mariënwater in Rosmalen; according to Rudy, the manuscript's dialect indicates that the Bridgettine monastery of Mariënwijngaard in Utrecht may have been its place of origin (Rudy, Virtual Pilgrimages (2011), p. 399). But aside from a reference to the Bridgettine order in the prayer-book's first item and a reference to one of her revelations (70v: ' sint brigida'), St Bridget of Sweden is not mentioned in the litany of saints, the saints listed in the Golden Litany or anywhere else in the manuscript.

[according to the online database Bibliotheca Neerlandica Manuscripta & Impressa].
The British Museum, since at least 14 November 1868: on this date the manuscript's illustrations were accessioned in the British Museum's Prints & Drawings Department; according to an inscription on f. [i]recto, the manuscript was transferred to the British Museum's Department of Manuscripts on 24 March 1879.
