- Title:
- John Norden's chorographical description of the shires
- Scope & Content:
-
ff. 1r–31r: ‘A Chorographicall discription of the seuerall Shires and Islands of Middlesex, Essex, Surrey, Sussex, Hamshire, Weighte, Garnesey and Jarsey, performed by the traueyle and uiew of John Norden, 1595.’
This manuscript was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I (f. 2r). Only the last page (f. 19r) of the description of Sussex remains. The description of Middlesex is not as full as that printed by Norden in Speculum Britanniae. The firste Parte. 1593, and the description of Essex differs susbstantially from Sir Henry Ellis's edition for the Camden Society (1840), made using a manuscript in the Marquis of Salisbury's library.
The maps which originally accompanied the volume were cut out by a former owner in the 18th century and kept by him between the leaves of a book, presumably to prevent them being damaged (see a note on the flyleaf.) At least three of them, Middlesex, Essex and Hampshire, together with the title-page and dedication, passed into the possession of Francis Grose, and subsequently to Richard Bull, of North Court, Isle of Wight, and were sold with Bull's collection of drawings and engravings in May 1881. The purchaser restored only two of the maps, Essex and Hampshire, with the title-page and dedication, to the manuscript which was already in his possession.
