Music manuscripts, papers and photographs relating to the life and musical career of Humphrey Searle, CBE (1915–1982), composer, broadcaster and Liszt scholar. As a whole this material should be regarded as a continuation of the existing Humphrey Searle collection (Add MS 71721-71862). Although it is made up of several deposits from different sources, its contents fall broadly under the existing categories, as follows:
Music: Scores of original compositions and arrangements; mainly manuscripts with copyists’ parts, transparencies and also photocopies where no originals exist.
Papers: Searle’s writings, articles and scripts; programmes and prospectuses for performances of his work, the typescript of his memoirs ('Quadrille with a Raven') and material relating to his widow Fiona Searle.
Liszt papers: Material relating to Searle’s interest in and studies of the composer Franz Liszt.
Photographs: Photographic prints and negatives, some assembled as if to illustrate his autobiography.
