BOOK OF HOURS, in Latin, containing:-Calendar. f. 1;-
" Officium beate Marie Virginis." f. 13;-" Officium niortuorum." f. 93 ;-" Canticum graduum." f. 141 b;-" Psalimi Penitentiales." f. 157;-" Officium Crucis." f. 185;-"Oratio devotissima pro persona propria": a prayer made in the name of one Smeralda. f. 223 b. Vellum ; ff. 224. Beautifully written and illuminated, in Italy, late in the xvth cent. On ff. 13, 93, 157, 185 ,Ire elaborate borders: foliage, etc., of gold on grounds of red, blue and green, with amorini, and medallions containing busts of saints; the initials enclosing miniatures of the Virgin, Death, David, and the Passion. Numerous other floreated borders and figure-initials occur elsewhere. The Calendar is in letters of blue and gold. Among the festivals are those of SS. Constantius (30 Jan.), Herculinus (1 Mar.), and Ubaldus (16 May), Bishops of Perugia, the Canonization (1446) of St. Nicholas of' Tolentino (5 June), and St. Bernardino the Confessor (can. 1450, 20 May). The festival of the last named, in whose honour a confraternity was founded at Perugia in 1456 (see its Capitoli, Perugia, 1565), is in gold. It may be inferred therefore that the volume was executed for a lady Darned Smeralda or Esmeralda living in or near Perugia, and bearing the aims (see f. 13) gules a bend azure, on a chief argent a cross of the field. Bound in crimson morocco of the 18th cent. In the centre are the arms and hat of a cardinal of the family of Colonna (? Prospero Colonna, Card. 1739-1743); but over the arms was pasted (and on the under-cover still remains) a thin layer of leather stamped with another coat of arms, a stalk with three flowers (pinks?). With book plate of William Horatio Crawford. Duodecimo.
