Collection of Motets, Masses, etc., probably mostly by Giovanni Gabrieli, or by other composers of the last quarter of the 16th century. Part books: first and second cantus and tenor.
- Scope & Content:
-
First and second cantus and tenor parts, in 3 volumes, of a collection of Motets, Masses, etc., probably by a composer, or composers, of the last quarter of the 16th cent. One of the pieces (vols, ii, iii, f. 17b) is addressed to Albert [III], Duke of Bavaria (d. 1579); another (vols, ii, iii, f. 18b) to one of the Fuggers [of Augsburg], evidently the secular Motet by Giovanni Gabrieli alluded to in Grove's Dictionary (i, p. 572) as included in Gabrieli's Sacræ Symphoniæ, part i, 1597. Two or three of the Motets enumerated below were certainly composed by G. Gabrieli, and others have a considerable resemblance to compositions by his father, Andrea Gabrieli.
The sacred Motets include the following, of which nos. 1-10, 13-24, are for 8 voices, only the cantus part (vol. i) being left of the latter group.
