Fantasias and other compositions for organ, violin, spinettina, or lute, in 2, 3, 4, and 5 parts, in score, by Girolamo Frescobaldi
- Scope & Content:
-
Fantasias and other compositions. The only pieces to which a name has been given are a 2-part 'fuga per l'organo', beginning with a 'canzona' (f. 3), and a 'Toccata per spinettina sola over Luto' (f. 36) in 3 parts.
Contents:
Fantasias, etc., for Organ, written on from two to five staves of 5 lines, in score. Many of them are fugal in character:
1-8. Eight compositions in 2 parts, the first entitled 'Canzona Prima.' ff. 3b-11.
9-22. Fourteen in 3 parts, without titles, ff. 12-35b.
23-28. Six in 4 parts, without titles. ff. 38-46. 29-36. Eight in 5 parts. The 5th part appears to be added as an accompaniment to the others, either on the pedal or another instrument, ff. 47-65.
Two compositions written on three staves of five lines each, the lower stave being apparently intended for the organ, in score:
1. 'Toccata per Spinettina Sola, ouer L[i]uto.' f. 36.
2. Piece unnamed for 'Spinettina sola.' f. 37.
Composition in G for violin and spinettina, with apparently a bass for organ, written on from two to four staves of five lines, in score. f. 66-68b.
