Cantus part of a collection of Latin motets by anonymous composers, with a mass and three In-nomines.
- Scope & Content:
-
passim. Cantus part of a collection of Motets, etc., mostly in honour of the Virgin. All the compositions are anonymous; from the character of those which have been identified, it appears probable that they were all written for 5 voices.1. ‘Et exultauit.’ In 2 keys. This does not appear to be a setting of the entire ‘Magnificat.’ ff. 1, 23b. 2. ‘Aue, dei patris filia.’ By Robert Johnson, f. 2. 3. Another setting of the same words. f. 6b. 4. ‘Tui filij‘; followed by ‘Dominus tecum,’ ‘Mater intacta,’ and ‘Esto nobis,’ which probably form part of the same Motet, f. 9b. 5. ‘Per pregustum.’ f. 11b. 6. ‘Maria stella, tuo natus’ (sic); with ‘Gratia plena,’ and ‘O quam dulcis.’ f. 12b. 7. ‘Sospitati olei‘; ‘Baptizatur‘; ‘O quam probatum‘; ‘Ergo Laudes‘; ‘Nam qui [in] corde’ (without music); and ‘Sospes.’ By John Taverner, Sen. (?). f. 14. 8. ‘Peccatum peccauit Jerusalem.’ By R. White (?). f. 17. 9. ‘O gloriosissima semper Virgo.’ f. 17b. 10. ‘Gaude plurimum‘ (without music); ‘Gaude, Maria‘; ‘Gaude, sacratissima virgo‘; ‘Gaude, Maria, Jesu mater’; ‘Gaudeamus Itaque‘; and ‘Eundum igitur Jesum.’ By J. Taverner (?). f. 18. 11. ‘Ave, Jesu Tui filii dulcis filia christi’; and ‘O gloriosissima semper Virgo.’ ff. 22b-23. 12. ‘Domine, Labia.’ f. 25. 13. ‘Salve, intemerata‘ (without music); ‘Ave, mulieris (sic) sanctissima’; ‘Et dum eum conciperes’; ‘Tu nimirum‘ (without music); ‘Per hæc nos‘; ‘Te præcamur‘ (sic); and ‘Secundum humanitatem.’ By Tallis. f. 33. 14. ‘Mater christi sanctissima‘; ‘Ergo, fili’; . . . ‘Tibi consecratos’; ‘Quin et nostros’; ‘Dona no[bis?]’; ‘Euge, cœli’; and a piece without title, f. 39b. 15. ‘O salutaris hostia.’ By Tallis. f. 43b. 16. ‘Domine, quis hab[itabit].’ f. 44b. 17. ‘Quia fecit.’ f. 45. 18. ‘Beata es, Virgo Maria.’ f. 48b.
ff 25b-32b. Cantus part of an anonymous Mass, probably written for 5 voices, beginning ‘Et in [terra pax].’
ff. 45b-48. 'In nomines,' of which nos. 2 and 3, and probably also no. 1, are for 5 instruments. Cantus part.1. By Dr. Bull. f. 45b. {c.f. Add MS 11586} 2. By Robert White. f. 46b. {cf. Add MS 32377 & 11586 [&] 29996} 3. By William Byrd. f. 47b. {cf. Add MS 32377}.
