ORIGINAL LETTERS of Henry St. John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke; 1716-1751. Holograph, except a copy at f. 110, and three letters (ff. 151-155) written at his dictation in 1751. Most of the letters are addressed to his sister Henrietta married in 1727 to Robert Knight, cr. Baron Luxborough in 1746 and Earl of Catherlough in 1762) and to her husband; they relate almost entirely to family matters. Only in two (ff. 97, 136) does the writer touch on polities. In the former, 5 Feb. 1736, he discusses the prospect of a lasting peace; and in the latter, writing to R. Knight on 12 June, 1738, he says that he has never coveted a place "in an Administration whose conduct [he] disapproved, or despised, and could not hope to alter," and that, as befits " a man of this temper," he is content " to retire from business to amusement, and from the government of a State to the government of himself," etc. In a letter dated 12 Aug. 1720 (f. 12) he -,peaks of a young friend at the French Court [Abbé Pierre Joseph Mary?] as " perhaps the most extraordinary genius in Europe," adding, " You may judg of his character by this, that they have taken him out of his garret, without any application but that which his merit made for him, to put him about the young king." His last three letters were written a few months before his death (12 Dec. 1751). On 11 April (f. 151) he writes, " The World, dear Sister, may very well spare a man as useless in it as I am, and I do assure you I can as easily spare the World "; and on 16 Aug. (f. 155) he speaks hopefully of being " under a painful and troublesome cure for a cancer," which " has succeeded in a multitude of cases." The volume also contains a few letters (almost all addressed to R. Knight) from Bolingbroke's father (Henry St. John, 1st Viscount St. John), from his brother John (2nd Viscount St. John, 1742), from his nephew Frederick (3rd Viscount St. John, 1749, and 2nd Viscount Bolingbroke, 1751), and from others, whose names are given in the Index. Paper; ff. 160. Folio.
