1. " THE POOR MAN'S TALENT," a Medical Handbook by Thomas Lodge, M.D., the poet; followed by similar works in the same hand and possibly by the same author. " The Poor Man's Talent," which consists of medical recipes and rules for the preservation of health, was first printed at Glasgow in 1881, by the Hunterian Club, from a MS. almost identical with the present one, and was included also in vol. iv. of The Complete Works of T. Lodge, Hunt. Club, 1883. It was composed about 1623 (see E. W. Gosse, " Memoir of T. Lodge," ibid., vol. i.). It commences with a letter of dedication " To the Right Honorable my very good Lady the Lady Ann Mother Countesse of Arundell " [Anne, widow of Philip Howard, 12th Earl of Arundel], for whom the work was compiled; and at the beginning (f. 29) and end of the 12th and last chapter are further addresses to the same. Following the 12th chapter (f. 32) are added " Certaine perticuler Noats and familiar medicines for divers infirmities," which are also included as part of " The Poor Man's Talent " in the above edition. Among these remedies is (f. 33 b) one which the author says he " often tried in the Roiall Hospitall att Macklin [Mechlin], upon souldiers that grew Lame by cold." Lodge is said to have practised in the Low Countries for a few years prior to 1619. The remaining articles, which are not enumerated in the list of Lodge's works (Complele Works, vol. i.), are as follows:-
2. " How to perfume gloves, to make perfumes and sweete waters, with divers other sundry preservatives as be made in Spaine and Portugall, translated forth of a written Spanish booke of ye Dutches of Ferius " [probably Jane Dormer, wife of Gomez Suarez de Figueroa, Duke of Feria, ob. 1612]. The work contains 87 chapters, and is followed by a table of contents. f. 82.
3. Recipes for " conserves and preserves." f. 52.
4. Directions how " to still waters." f. 56.
5. Remedies for affections of the eyes, the head, the ears, etc. f. 57.
6. Directions for diet, preservatives, etc., in time of the plague; of a simpler character than those contained in Lodge's " Treatise of the Plague" printed in his works (v. above). f. 91 b. Paper; ff. 94. xviith cent. On f. 63 b are the names of John and Frances Wymshurst, and on f. 94 b that of Thomas Twyford, in late 17th-cent. hands. Folio.
