CORRESPONDENCE relating to military affairs in Cornwall, 1590-1601 ; consisting for the most part of letters addressed to John Nance, of Nance in Illogan, by Sir Francis Godolphin, Sir Nicholas ,Parker, and others, respecting his duty as captain (see f. 3) of the levies in the parishes of St. Erth, Phillack, Perranuthno, St. Hillary, Uny Lelant, St. Ives, Towednack, Zennor, Ludgvan, Gulvall, and Madrun. At f. 30 is a copy of a letter from Queen Elizabeth to Sir Walter Raleigh, as Lord Warden of the Stannaries, praising the zeal and readiness of her subjects in those parts, dated 12 Sept. a 41 [1599]: see Cal. of State Papers, 1598-1601, p. 321. The volume also contains a few private letters to J. Nance, including one (f. 1) from [William Paulet, 3rd Marquis of] Winchester., 26 Dec. 1578; and one (f. 36) from James Bagge, 30 June, 1600, with a short account of the battle fought at Nieuport on 22 June.
