" A TREWE STORIE of the Catholicke prisoners in Yorke Castle their behaviour and defence of yecatholicke Religion when they were hail'd by force to the Protestantes sermons, anno domini 1600, with a confutation of Cooke the Ministers sermon by C. J. Priest." Apparently by William Richmont, whose name is attached to The Authours request for the prisoners allowaunce of his labours (f. 3 b). On f. 4 is an address from " The Prisoners to the authour in approvinge the worke," with a list of the prisoners' names and stations. This is followed (f. 5) by " the names of the preachers that laboured to seduce the Catholick prisoners," and (f. 5 b) " A table of the Preachers untruthes, and other notes of their evell consciences and course." Particular accounts are given of most of the sermons (of which there were fifty), of the behaviour of the prisoners when the sermons were delivered, and of the confutations of the same by William Stillington, of Kelfield, Esquire, and others of the prisoners. The most important of these is that (f. 34b) mentioned in the title as being by C. J., probably Cuthbert Johnson al. William Darell: cf. a MS. described in the Catalogue of Musæum Thoresbyanum [published as an Appendix to Whitaker's Ducatus Leodiensis], 1816, p. 86, as " A learned disputation betwixt ]Robert Cook, B.D., Vicar of Leedes, and a Romish Priest ... at Yorke, an. 1610." The writer of the article on Robert Cooke in the Dict. of National Biography, vol. iii., 1887, supplies the name of the Priest as Cuthbert Johnson (v. above). Included in the volume, of a later date, are also:-(1) Notes on "Families descended from the House of Howard." f. 73.- (2) Orders for the "bringing of the Regalia from Westminster Abby to Westminster Hall," and for "the proceeding to the Coronation," of K. William and Qu. Mary [11 Apr. 1689]. ff. 74-78; -(3) Blazon of Arms of the Nobility. f. 79. At the end, reversing the volume, are notes and commonplaces on questions of heraldry. Paper; ff. 170. xviith cent. The name of Margaritt Saville is on f. 1, and on the inside cover is the book-plate of William Constable, F.R.S., of Burton Constable (ob. 1791). Small Quarto.
