CHRONICLES Of English History, in Latin 1. "Tractatus de Bruto abbreviato": a chronicle of England from Brut to the battle of Evesham, 1265; in three books, with lists of chapters. f. 2. The, first books begins, " Encas cuin Ascanio filio fugiens exciduim urbis," and ends (f. 26b) with the death of Cadwallader in 689, " Die autem xii Kal. Maii migravit ad dominum anno ab incarnatione domini sexcentesimno octoge[simo nono]." There is another copy of this book in Cotton MS. Titus D. xii. art. 2, ff. 3-22 (cf. Sir T. D. Hardy, Descriptive Catalogue of British History, Rolls Series, vol. ii. p. 473). The second book, which begins (f. 26 b), " Anno ab incarnacione domini DC. lxxxoixo mortuo Kadwaladro successit ei nepos suus," carries the chronicle to the Norman conquest. The third book (f. 37b) begins (after the table of chapters), "Postuam Willelmau Lungespe, filius Rollinos primi Normannorum, " and ends (f. 62) " atque sic cilicio proprio quo carnem arcius denunciat contectus, ut dictum est, martiritur. Explicit codex Bruton." A leaf is missing after f. 47. This book also, in part, is included in the above-named Cotton MS. (ff. 23-37). It there has for its title " Conquestus Anglie," and stops at the accession of Henry II., whereas the present copy is carried down to the death of Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, at Evesham in 1265, the latter part being especially full and interesting 2. A short chronicle of the Kings of England to 1273, beg. " Tempore antiquorum Anglorum dividebatur Anglia in quinque partes," and ending "Huic successit Edwardus films ejus anno scilicet dni. MoCCoLXXIIIo "; A leaf is missing after f. 64. For another copy see Arundel MS. 310. (Hardy, op. cit., vol. iii. p. 200.) f. 63. The entire MS., according to the description in Macray's Catalogue, col. 501, exactly agrees with artt. 5 and 6 of Rawlinson MS. B. 150 (13th cent.) in the Bodleian Library, and Hardy (m. p. 164) in his notice of the latter MS. ascribes the " Brutus abbreviatus " to a monk of Battle Abbey. See also C. Bémont, Simon de Montfort, etc., Paris, 1884, p. xlii. Vellum; ff. 70. xivth cent. On the covers are the arms of James Ley, Earl of Marlborough (ob. 1628). Other owners in the 16th cent. were Thomas Harte and Edward Benet (f. 69 b). and on f. 2 is a note of the sale " pro ii.s. v.d." to " Master Hopkyns." Small Quarto.
