Lists of books belonging to the library of King James VI of Scotland, c. 1573-1583. In the hand of Peter Young, (1544–1628), royal tutor and diplomat. With autograph notes and exercises by King James VI on the flyleaves.
ff. 1v-2v: Notes by Peter Young, including classical extracts and commonplaces, with several ‘Apophthegmata Regis’, or remarks made by King James VI.
f. 3r: Copy-book exercise by King James VI. Two copies of a maxim of Cato the Censor, quoted by Aulus Gellius (Attic Nights, XVI.1). With a partial third copy. With the royal sign-manual.
ff. 4r-9r: List of books, many of which are priced. Arranged by printer, e.g. Wechel, Robert Estienne, Colines, Tiletanus, Oporinus, and Frosehover, with others ‘ex catalogo librirum prohibitorum’. These books do not appear to have formed part of the royal library. The titles are extracted ‘des catalogues empruntez de Mr And. Melvin’, i.e. Andrew Melville, who returned to Scotland from Geneva in 1574.

f. 10r: ‘Bukis gottin be me fra my lord Regentis grace at sundry tymes’. No date.
f. 10v: ‘Buikes brocht furth of Sterling to Halyrud house’. 11 November 1583.
f. 11r: ‘Bukes gottin fra Arthur Wode [Arthur Wood, brother of John, above (f. 10r)]’. 18 March 1577/8.
f. 11v: List of books bought or presented in 1575-1578. With names of donors.
f. 12r-12v: Books delivered by Arthur Wode, ‘as being of the Quenis bukes borrowit be his brother Mr Jhone’. No date.
ff. 12v-14v: Continuation of the list of books above (f. 11v).
ff. 15r-18v: ‘Index librorum Regis’. A list of around 200 volumes, with details on whether a book was bought or presented, whether it came from the library of Mary, Queen of Scots, and whether it was subsequently given away by the king.
f. 18v: Lists of bows, arrows, ‘golf cloubbis’, and other miscellaneous articles given to the king.
f. 19r: Copy-book exercise by King James VI. Copied alphabet, in majuscule and minuscule italic. With the sign-manual in Latin, French, and English.
ff. 19v-20v: Continuation of the notes by Peter Young above (ff. 1v-2v).
