CUSTOMS of the town of Northampton, in fifty-eight chapters, the last chapter containing an ordinance made in 1341. Imperfect, beg. in the middle of chap. xxv. French. ff. 3-9. A later MS. in English, containing eighty chapters, is preserved among the archives of the corporation (see Northamptonshire Notes and Queries, vol. i., 1884-6, p. 204). The rest of the volume is filled with additions in later hands, relating to the government of the town, viz.: (a) Oaths of the town clerk, mayor, and other officers. ff. 10-15, 19 b-24 b;-(b) Confirmation of a royal charter prescribing the mode of election of mayor and bailiffs, 28 Alar. 5 Hen. VII. [1490], with further regulations on the same subject. ff.15b-17b;-(c)Letterspatent with reference to the paving of the streets, 18 Alar. 9 Hen. VI. [143]. f. 18 ; -(d) " Assize of breed aftyr the foorme of the statut of Wynchestre." f. 19 b;-(e) Regulations with regard to pleadings, 5 Sept. 1 Chas I. [1625], signed by the mayor, recorder, aud bailiffs. f. 25. Vellum; ff. 27. xvth-xviith centt. Bound in wooden boards covered with brown leather, finely tooled, with metal clasps and bosses; modern back. On the fly-leaves are the names of several mayors and other officials of Northampton, 17th and 18th centt., the latest being H. J. Woolley, Mayor, 1769 (f. 2). With book-plate of arms of Thomas Bateman, of Middleton Hall, co. Derby. Folio.
