Bede, Commentary on Luke
- Scope & Content:
-
Contents:
Bede (b. c. 673, d. 735), monk of Wearmouth-Jarrow, Commentary on Luke (In Lucae Evangelium expositio). Imperfect.
Begins partway into Book 1. Incipit of Book 1 (f. 1r): 'occulta sacerdotii legalis arcana patuerunt linguaque pontificum iudaeorum quam diffidentiae vincula strinxerant'. Some number of leaves are missing between ff. 11 and 12, which would have contained a large amount of text at the end of Book 1 and the beginning of Book 2. Explicit of Book 1 (f. 10v): 'Sed & innumeris scripturae sanctae locis trigenarius numerus christi'.
Incipit of Book 2 (f. 11r): 'curabat eos; Solis occubitis passionem mortemque significat illius qui dixit'. Some number of leaves are missing between ff. 22 and 23, which would have contained a large amount of text at the end of Book 2 and the beginning of Book 3. Explicit of Book 2 (f. 22v): 'quia &si se fingat hypocrita; non est [bona] qui facit opera mala; &si reprehendat' (the word in brackets has been inserted above the line as a correction).
Incipit of Book 3 (f. 23r): 'Quae in medicos erogaverat omnem substantiam suam; Nec ab ullo poterat curari'. Book 3 ends on f. 36r. Explicit of Book 3 (f. 36r): 'quia omnes uitilitates quae ex donorum dei gratia suscipiuntur ex isto fonte emanant'. Rubric (f. 36r): 'finit liber tertius. incipit liber quartus'. The bottom half of f. 36 is cut away, and has subsequently been repaired by the attachment of a blank piece of parchment. Folio 36v was originally blank, but two brief passages from the Offices of the Dead have been added by another hand: 'Creator omnium rerum deus qui me de limo terre formasti & mirabiliter sanguine re[...]' and 'Consolator dolentis anime & mestorum vere paraclite quod promittis & ex hoc nomine ne differas cumplere domine pie ihesu'.
Some number of leaves are missing between ff. 36 and 37, which would have contained the beginning of Book 4. Incipit of Book 4 (f. 37r): 'sinapis granum non herbarum quae velociter arescunt; sed arboris instar exsurgit'. Some number of leaves are missing between ff. 40 and 41, which would have contained a large amount of text at the end of Book 4 and the beginning of Book 5.
Incipit of Book 5 (f. 41r): 'contempserit; omnes saeculi dilicias luxusque calcaverit; multo [plura] in pręsenti recipiet; quia a fratribus atque consortibus propositi sui' (the word in brackets has been inserted above the line as a correction). Some number of leaves are missing between ff. 46 and 47, which would have contained a large amount of text at the end of Book 5. Explicit of Book 5 (f. 46v): '&tiam quos verbum dei nec audire contigit discussio signetur. quibus quinque personis omne genus humanum quod in die iudicii'.
Rubric (f. 47r, in black): 'Praefatio bede in vito libro super Lucam. qua superiorem evangelii lectionem. sequenti decentissima figura coaptat'. Incipit of Book 6 (f. 47r): 'Cum sapientissimus regum salomon in figuram christi [&] ecclesiae templum domino conderet' (the abbreviation in brackets has been inserted above the line as a correction). Ends imperfectly, lacking the end of Book 6. Explicit of Book 6 (f. 52v): 'qui licet die sequente hoc est quinata decima sit luna crucifixus hac tamen nocte qua agnus immolabatur & carnis sanguinisque sui discipulis'.
Decoration:
