CHANTRY RECORDS: foundation records of a chantry in the parish church of St Helen, North Wingfield, co. Derby; circa 1500 (aft. 1 July 1495). Origin: England. See J. C. Cox, Notes on the churches of Derbyshire, i (1875), pp. 418-420. Damage to f. 2 with loss of text. Contemporary marginalia. The manuscript was the property of Thomas Martin, the antiquary (d.1771), whose signature appears on f. 1v. It was very likely purchased by John Thane, the book and print seller, at a sale of Martin's manuscripts 29 April 1773 (S. Baker and G. Leigh sale-cat., lot 155). Purchased 18 May 1787.
Vellum; ff. i+22. 17th? cent. foliation 2-20 on ff. 4-22. 268 x 198mm. Gatherings: i-ii8, iii4. Signatures, some cropped. Single columns. Two English hands: (A) ff. 2-21;- (B) A hand contemporary with but written later than A.
ff. 21v-22v. Initials in blue. Title in a 17th? cent. hand, f. 1. Memoranda on paper concerning the MS. in two 18th cent. hands, f. 3. Original cover, a vellum wrapper, ff. 1, i.

1. ff. 2-18v. Foundation ordinances of Sir John Babyngton and Rauf Savage, consequent on a licence from Henry VII, founding a perpetual chantry of one secular priest at the altar of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the church of
St Helen; 1 April 1489. Imperfect at the beginning. Followed (f. 15) by ordinances relating to land belonging to the priest's dwelling house; 1 July 1495.
2. ff. 18v-21. Recital of a recovery of an annuity payable to the chantry priest from the prior of Lenton; 10 July 1490.
3. ff. 21v-22v. Formula for presentation to and induction to the chantry; circa 1500. Latin. As follows: (a) For presentation by the prior of Newstead, co.
