POCKET BIBLE: Vulgate version; mid 13th cent. Latin. Origin: England? With St Jerome's prefaces 'Frater Ambrosius' and 'Desiderii mei'. 3 Esdras follows Ezra-Nehemiah, and the Acts of the Apostles follows the Pauline Epistles. The volume ends (f. 630) with a copy of the dictionary of Hebrew names beg. 'Aaz apprehendens', incomplete at the end. Contemporary - 17th cent. marginalia. A contents list in the hand of John Douglas (b.1721, d. 1807) is inserted as f. 1*. Belonged, 1622, to Charles Fairfax, antiquary, son of Thomas, 1st Baron Fairfax, see f. 1. Presented by John Douglas, D.D., Bishop of Salisbury 1791, 23 March 1787.
Vellum; ff. 1*+672. Sec. fol. 'predicationis in cruce sit'. Probably originally two volumes, now bound as one, see wearing to ff. 306v, 307. 113x85mm. Gatherings general of 24 (iv26, xi26, xii20, xiii18, xx20, xxviii34). Quires marked from the second at foot of first folio B-I, K-T, V-Z, Aa-Dd, probably a 17th cent. binding instruction. Last gathering complete, but subsequent text lost. Double columns. One small gothic book script throughout. Initials and heading in red and blue penwork. 17th cent. gilt-stamped brown calf binding.
