Deed of sale ('The Ravenna Papyrus') (ChLA III+XLVIII 181; P.Ital. II 35; TM 114818)
- Scope & Content:
-
Deed of sale made in Ravenna on behalf of Domninus, a hayward (agellarius) from Cesena (in the neighbourhood of Ravenna), to Deusdedit, a court officer of Ravenna. Domninus sells to Deusdedit five-twelfths of a small estate (fundus) called Custinis and two-twelfths of a farmhouse (casale) called Bassianum, for the price of five gold solidi. The deed is signed by five witnesses: Pascalis (palatinus sacrarum largitionum); Eugenius (palatinus sacrarum largitionum); Moderatus (comitiacus); Andreas (augustalis); Vitalis (cerearius). The notary (forensis) is named Flavius Iohannis. Three lines of writing are detectable on the verso: they contain an endorsement and probably relate to an ancient preservation system.

- User Conditions:
- Physical Characteristics:
-
Material: Papyrus.
Dimensions: 2440 x 201 mm, mounted in a glass case.
Ruling: 1 column containing 95 lines on the recto; 1 column containing at least 3 lines on the verso.
Script: Six hands of writing can be detected, belonging to the notary and to the witnesses. The notary Flavius Iohannis uses a professional and rapid New Roman Cursive. The writing of the witnesses is also New Roman Cursive: those of Pascalis and Moderatus are substantially upright and slow in execution, while that of Eugenius is more rapid and rounded. Andreas’s hand is equally rapid but decisively inclined to the right; Vitalis uses a rough form of this script. The script of the verso is a new Roman cursive with peculiarities of curial writing. It is written across the fibres on the recto, and along the fibres on the verso.
