(d.1757), diplomat and politician, whose bookplate appears in the volume (f. ii). Sir Paul assisted and finally succeeded his father as envoy to Portugal (1697-1708), and was ambassador to Spain in 1715. Presented by Paul Methuen, Esq., of Corsham, cousin and heir of Sir Paul, 5 March 1792.
Vellum and paper; ff. ii+279. Late 18th cent. foliation 1-292, probably done at the British Museum, replaced by a later sequence that ignores blanks. 268 x 195mm. Gatherings of 20, containing eight paper bifolia within inner and outer folio sheets of vellum. The following, composed in the same way, are irregular: vii22 (lacks 1), x14, xv20 (lacks 18-20). Catchwords regular from f. 20v. Quires marked i-vj at head of first folio recto, ff. 1, 41, 57, 76, 94 (ij cropped, f. 21). Double columns. One hand throughout. Red and blue penwork initials. Introductory paragraphs in gold, f. 1. Watermarks: (A) Wagon. nr. Briquet 3528 (earliest example Perpignan 1429). The nearest example in O. Valls I Subiro, Paper and watermarks in Catalonia, 2 vols.
