KENT AND SUSSEX CHARTULARIES: fragments of chartularies and transcripts of deeds, chiefly relating to south-west Kent, including Romney Marsh, and the adjacent areas of East Sussex, 12th cent.-1447; 15th cent. Chiefly Latin. Origin: England . The collection may have been complete by the 16th cent., when it was owned by John 'Frognll' (Frogenhall?), whose ex libris (f. 4v) and memoranda appear (ff. 3v-6, 8, 18). Some headings and memoranda in a late 17th cent. - early 18th cent. hand. The MS. was part of the collection of Edward Hasted, antiquary (d.1812). Purchased with Add. 5478-5539, possibly in 1795 when Hasted's library was sold.
Vellum (art. 1) and paper (articles 2-6); ff. 18. Old pagination, late 17th cent.-early 18th cent. Composite manuscript. 250 x 150mm. approx. Each folio separately mounted on a guard, 19th cent. Single columns. Various English secretary hands. Watermarks: (A) Unidentified mark. ff. 10, 13;- (B) Tête de boeuf. f. 16.

1. ff. 1-8. Eight leaves from a chartulary of Monks Horton priory, Kent; 15th cent. 20 items, 12th-14th cent., including royal, papal and episcopal charters. Printed in J. R. Scott, 'Charters of Monks Horton Priory', Archaeologia Cantiana, x (1876), pp. 269-281. Davis, Cartularies, p. 76. Stowe 935 is a mid-15th-cent. chartulary of Monks Horton.
2. ff. 9-12v. Four leaves from a chartulary of the priory of St Sepulchre, Canterbury; 15th cent. Ten items, all apparently 13th cent., and the opening phrases of an eleventh (f. 12v). Two items bear marginal references, possibly to original charters or another record book: 'ca. lvj' (no. 7, f. 11);- 'ca. xxxvij' (no. 10, f. 12v). Davis, op. cit., p. 25. Pages are cropped at foot, with some loss of text.
3. f. 13. Grant to St Martin's priory, Dover, of a rent in Lyminge, Kent;, 13th? cent. Copy, 15th cent.
4. ff. 14-16v. Three leaves, possibly from a secular chartulary; late 15th cent. Latin and English. Imperf. at the beginning. The items, which relate to Kent and East Sussex, are dated 1397-1447. They include the will of William Fynche, of Netherfield, co. Suss., 10 Sept. 1443 (ff. 15v-16v).
5. ff. 17-18. Quitclaim of rents in Ruckinge, co. Kent; 13th? cent. Copy, late 15th cent.
6. f. 18v. Gift of land in parish of St Mary, Romney Marsh, Kent, with letters of attorney; 23 Nov. 1447. Copies, late 15th cent.
