COMMONPLACE BOOK OF JOHN WHITE: containing music, accounts and a grammatical treatise; late 14th-early 15th cent. Latin, English and some French. Origin: England. Partly in the autograph of John White al. Whyte al. Whgt, who owned the volume in 1410-1411 (f. 15v). White may have been a student at one of the Inns of Court, London, and was possibly the pupil of a John Watirden al. Watyrden, see art. 3 below and f. 14. White's name, which appears on ff. 7v-8, is also associated in memoranda with those of Robert 'Brouuham' (ff. 6v-7), 'Thomas Krim' (f. 6v) and John 'Pepir' (f. 7), possibly fellow students. For descriptions of the MS. see:
J. Ritson, Ancient Songs . . . (1792), pp. xxxvii-xl; R. L. Greene, The Early English Carols (1935), pp. 331-332. The statement in the hand of Francis Blomefield (f. 1v) ascribing the MS. to John Brakley is erroneous, as is the subsequent memorandum by Ritson ascribing Blomefield's note to Thomas Martin of Palgrave. See N. Davis and G. S. Ivy, 'MS Walter Rye 38 and its French Grammar', Medium Aevum, xxxi (1962), pp. 110-124. Pen sketch of device of a tree and pierced heart, with mottoes 'pur vere amour je su mort' and 'Fuit homo',
f. 18, repeated in pencil without mottoes, f. 20v. Owned by: Francis Blomefield, antiquary (d.1752). f. 1v;- John Ives, Suffolk Herald. Ive's sale-cat., Baker & Leigh, 5 March 1777, lot 397, purchased by Thane;- Joseph Ritson. f. 1v. Presented by Joseph Ritson with Add. 5665, 7 Aug. 1795.
Vellum (f. 1) and paper; ff. 22+8*. 18th cent. foliation 1-21 from f. 2. 135 x 100mm. Single sheets mounted on guards, except ff. 2-3, 5-6 (bifolia). Vellum fly-leaf, f. 1. Various cursive hands, late 14th-early 15th cent. Watermark, fleur de lis, f. 13. Extensively repaired at the British Museum.
