THEOLOGICAL COLLECTION: on virtues and vices, sermons; late 13th cent., with early 14th cent. additions. Latin. Origin: England. From the Cistercian abbey of Hailes, co. Glos. Contemporary and later medieval marginals. The following names of 15th-16th cent. monks at Hailes occur: (a) John Brystow. 'Grace me gouerne Brystow'. 'Ego Johannes Brystow vicarius de Roda' (Rode?, co. Som.). Brystow records that he was professed in 1451 under Richard Landrake, abbot of Hailes and that he visited Rome in 1468. f. 147v;- (b) 'Thomas Harwod Monachus . . . custos ecclesie iurisdicionis de Hayles Tempore Anthonii Abbati . . .', i.e. Anthony Melton, fl. 1515-1527 (VCH Gloucestershire, ii, p. 99). f. 146. 16th-17th cent. memoranda occur, ff. 1v, 66v-67 (with sketches of dogs), 88v-89, 90v, 146, 147. The following 18th cent. ex libris occur: William Yates, 1750, 1753. ff. 2, 3;- 'Olim E. Libris J. Hodges, Esq.'. f. ii verso;- 'E. Small gothic book script. ff. 3-62v, 91-110v (art. 7), 115-136v;- B. Documentary cursive. ff. 63-63v, 65-90v, 110v-111, 137-145. Art. 9 (ff. 110v-114) in plummet, partially over-written by art. 10 (ff. 112v-114v), both early 14th cent.
