CECIL CALENDAR: astronomical calendar with tables for finding Easter, later owned by Sir William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley; 1463. Latin. Origin: England. February (part), March and April (part) missing between ff. 5-6. Owned by: (a) Sir John Cheke, fellow of St John's College, Cambridge, circa 1535. Obits of John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester (d.1535), benefactor of St John's, and of 'domini Rede', possibly Robert Rede, Chief Justice of Common Pleas, benefactor of Cambridge University, appear in Cheke's hand, together with Cheke's birthdate, ff. 3v, 6v;- (b) William Cecil, who married Cheke's sister in 1541. Cecil notes his own birth date, given here as 13 Sept. 1521, the dates of his marriages and other family details, 1541-1545;- (c) Peter Le Neve, antiquary (d.1729), whose hand appears on ff. 1-3v;- (d) Thomas Martin, antiquary, of Palgrave (d.1771), who married Le Neve's widow. Martin's initials appear, f. 1v. The item does not appear in Martin's sale-catalogue, 1773;- (e) Richard Gough, antiquary (d.1809). Purchased at Gough's sale, Leigh and Sotheby 5 April 1810, lot 4176.
Vellum; ff. 13. 17th-18th cent. foliation 1-12 through ff. 2-13. 225 x 155mm. Gatherings irregular: 2 leaves missing between ff. 5 and 6. Calendar in red and black. Penwork initials in blue and red.
