ESTATE BOOK OF CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL PRIORY, CANTERBURY: apparently compiled by an obedientary concerned with estate and household management, possibly John de Gore; early 14th cent. (after 1316). Latin. Origin: England. See: Davis, Cartularies, no. 184; D. Oschinsky, ed., Walter of Henley (1971), pp. 15-16;
R. A. L. Smith, Canterbury Cathedral Priory (1943), p. 206. In particular, for the ascription to Gore see A history of Canterbury Cathedral, ed. P. Collinson,
N. Ramsay, and M. Sparks (1995), p. 354, n. 66. Contents list in a late 16th-early 17th cent. hand, referring to the series of red pagination, f. 1v. Material possibly relating to provenance is heavily erased, ff. 10, 16v, 17. The following 16th cent. marginalia occur: (a) references to manorial accounts. ff. 23, 124;- (b) reference to a ledger at Christ Church. f. 42v;- (c) cross reference to pagination. ff. 75, 78v;- (d) 'for Mr John Clark'. f. 113. '153', f. 1v foot and f. 153, presumably a reference to the number of folios. '77', 16th? cent., f. 1v head. For later provenance of this MS. see Add. 6156.
Vellum; ff. 153. 16th-17th cent. pagination in red pencil, uneven numbers only given, 1-13, 19-295 (with text loss before p. 19). Composite manuscript. 190 x 115mm. Gatherings: generally of 12, irregular before f. 17 and after f. 125. The binding is too tight to allow counting at the beginning and end of the volume. Catchwords: ff. 16v, 28v, 52v, 64v, 76v, 100v (cropped). Single columns. Three cursive book scripts: A. ff. 10-16v;- B. ff. 17-125;- C. ff. 125v-147. Art. 3 (imperf. at beginning), and art. 4 begin on, or are the first item in, new quires. Calendar, headings, etc., in red, with some black and blue.
Contents:
1. ff. 2v-8. Calendar, in red, black and blue. Feasts include saints particularly associated with Canterbury, eg. in red, St Salvius, 26 June, St Ositha, 7 Oct. Imperf., f. 8. Heavily annotated in pen and dry point.
