AACHEN CORONATION ORDER: Imperial Coronation Order from the Cathedral at Aachen; circa 1200, with an addition, early 14th cent. Latin. Origin: North? Germany. See: H. Keussen, 'Aquensia in der Handschriften-Sammlung des Britischen Museums zu London', Zeitschrift des Aachener Geschichtsvereins, xx (1898), p. 284; Holtzmann, iii (1952), p. 102. A description of the MS. by Henry Ellis, then Keeper of Manuscripts, written circa 1819, is appended, ff. 32-40. A 15th cent. marginal,
f. 18, states that the Bull of Pope Adrian (art. 5) was kept under the High Altar of the Cathedral, together with other grants bearing the seal of Charlemagne. Notes relating to provenance in 18th - early 19th cent. hands occur, f. 1v. These notes are transcribed in Holtzmann, iii, p. 102. As follows: (a) 'Hic liber spectat ad regalem ecclesiam B.M. Aquisgrani.' Excised;- (b) 'Manuscrit qu'on dit avoir servi au Sacre de l'Empereur Charlemagne'. On a mounted slip;- (c) A memorandum by Jean-Baptiste Maugérard, French government commissary for science and art, indicates that he acquired the MS. in Year 12 (1803-1804), probably in preparation for the coronation of Napoleon, which took place on
2 Dec. 1804. Maugérard's note, which is partly excised, also states that he acquired the chartulary of Trier Cathedral. See also E. Stephany, 'Über den Empfang des Römischen Königs vor Seiner Krönung . . .', Miscellanea pro arte. Festschrift für Hermann Schnitzler (1965), p. 273. The description by Ellis (f. 32) states that the MS. was purchased by Mrs Sarah Sophia Banks at the sale of the library of Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, Prince de Benevento, which took place in London, Sotheby, 8 May 1816: the item has not been identified in the sale-cat. Mrs Banks, the sister of Sir Joseph Banks, died 27 Sept. 1818. A note by Sir Frederick Madden in the Donations Register, Manuscripts Department Archives, states that Sir Joseph, thinking his sister had left no will, presented her manuscripts to the British Museum on 14 Nov. 1818. A will was subsequently found leaving the MSS. to Lady Banks. Presented with Add. 6277-6342 by Lady Dorothea Banks, 19 Dec. 1818.
Vellum, with paper fly-leaves and appendices; ff. 40. Pencilled pagination on the vellum section crossed through. Sec. fol. 'te angelus meus'. 240 x 160mm. approx. Gatherings (ff. 2-31): i-iii8, iv6.
