CONFRATERNITY LETTER: letter from Bartholomew, warden of the Friars Minor of Babwell, Bury St Edmunds, to the brethren and confraternity of the house, concerning privileges relating to confession and absolution granted during Jubilee Year by a Bull of Pope Sixtus IV; Babwell, 1475. Latin. Origin: England. A copy possibly from a formulary. The articles of the Bull and the form of absolution are listed below the letter. '25' in ink, in margin beside the initial letter, 16th? cent. Note of ownership? 'George Juice, 18 May 1648'. A memorandum by Sir Frederic Madden on the mount states that it was not known to what collection the item belonged: this suggests that it may have been found loose and incorporated by Madden after 1828, see Add. 6416, art. 5, and Add. 6404.
Vellum; 1 folio. Formerly used as a fly-leaf in a binding. Documentary cursive script. Initial and penwork in red and blue. Disfigured with pen scratches.
