GOSPELS: Four Gospels, St Jerome's version glossed, probably written in England; 13th cent. Latin. Origin: England? St Luke's Gospel lacks part of the gloss. Additional interlinear and marginal glosses in contemporary and later medieval hands occur throughout. Few post-medieval marginal notes. Prefaces as follows: S. Berger, Les Préfaces jointes aux Livres de la Bible dans les manuscrits de la Vulgate (1902), nos. 199 (St Matthew), 225 (St Mark), 230 (St Luke), St John has no preface. Catchwords regular from f. 177v. The placing of f. 177 as the first folio of quire xxi is a binder's error, see catchword, f. 177v. Gothic book scripts. Two scribes as follows: A. St Matthew and St Mark. ff. 1-164v;- B. St Luke and St John. ff. 165-318. Each Gospel begins on a new quire. Red and blue initials and penwork, probably by the same scribe throughout. Marginal grotesques, chiefly human heads and figures, with some animals and birds, in crayon and pen, red and blue. Wheel of fortune, pen, lower margin, f. 32. Plain gold initial letter, beginning of St Matthew, f. 4.
