PSALTER: with preface of St Jerome, Canticles and Athanasian Creed, written and illuminated probably in London; 2nd quarter of the 15th cent. Latin. Origin: England. See A Survey of Manuscripts Illuminated in the British Isles. Later Gothic Manuscripts 1390-1490, ed. K. L. Scott, I, p. 72, n. 17, II, pp. 180, 201, Table I (p. 379). The MS. was given in a mutilated state by Mr Joseph Parker of Exmouth to Miss Eliza Dennis Denyer of Chelsea, in July 1792. All but two of the original historiated initials with full-page borders are missing. Miss Denyer completed the MS. and illumination with the assistance of Mr William Jones, see note by John Denyer,
f. 2. A silhouette portrait of John Denyer is attached (f. 2) and a similar portrait of his wife, Martha, with signature (f. 3). Bequeathed by Miss E. D. Denyer,

Vellum; ff. 195+20*+92*. Sec. fol. 'quantam non potes'. 280 x 200mm. Gatherings of eight (ff. 4, 5 inserted, ii6, ff. 20, 21 inserted, ix lacks 8 (replaced by insert), xi lacks 7 (replaced by insert), xiv lacks 1 (replaced by insert), xvi lacks 2 (replaced by insert), xviii lacks 3 (replaced by insert), xix lacks 3, 4 (replaced by inserts), xxiv lacks 6-8 (6, 7 replaced by inserts). Catchwords generally regular from f. 28v. Single columns. Written area 170 x 115mm. Formal gothic book script. Calendar in small gothic book script. Early 19th cent. black leather binding, gilt-stamped.

Original decoration: headings in red, capitals and line-fillers in red and blue penwork, initials and borders in gold and colours. Two surviving historiated initials with full borders, f. 46 (ps. 26), f. 61v (ps. 38). Mutilated initial page, ps. 1, part of inner border and text only remaining (f. 20*).
Decoration and calligraphic work completed by Eliza Denyer: ff. 4v, 5, 20v, 21, 76, 91, 108, 125, 142, 150-151, 195. Includes two whole-page miniatures (ff. 4v, 20v) and title-page (f. 5).
