Roll of expenses in wax and spices by the royal households
- Scope & Content:
-
This roll contains a summary of the expenses in wax and spices incurred by the households of King Edward I of England (r. 1272-1307); Queen Margaret of France (b. c. 1279, d. 1318), his second wife; the Prince of Wales, the future Edward II (r. 1307-1327); and Thomas of Brotherton (b. 1300, d. 1338), eldest son of King Edward I and Margaret. The roll covers the period between 20 November 1300 and 19 November 1301 (29 Edward I) (see membrane 1d) but is incomplete, as the final membranes are now lost.
Records the expenditure of various members of the royal household on diverse categories of wax, sugar and spices. It lists over twenty types of spices, including ginger, long pepper, round pepper, galangal, cumin, cinnamon and saffron. For each item, the roll also records the remaining quantity from the previous year.
The account was compiled by several royal clerks, including Ralph de Stokes, Thomas de Querle, John Langford, Walter Reginald, and Robert de Langerton. The contemporary title of the account on the dorse refers to this account as compiled 'by Ralph de Stokes and others', suggesting that de Stokes may have had a more significant role in its production (membrane 1d).
