ARDERNE ON FISTULA: the English version of the treatise on fistula by John Arderne (fl. 1370); mid 15th cent. Origin: England. Beg. (f. 1v) 'Iohn Arderne fro the first pestelence'. Preceded by a list of chapters. Pen drawings of surgical instruments, ff. 41-41v. The text is printed from Sloane MS. 6 in D'A. Power, ed., Treatises of fistula in ano, EETS, o.s. 139 (1910). Various 16th cent. marginals, notes on recipes, eg. ff. 1, 20, 21. The name 'Iuo Hartland', possibly a previous owner occurs, late 16th-early 17th cent., ff. 10, 23, 40. Memorandum 'to my veri loving frend Roger Prosser', late 16th-early 17th cent., f. 16v. Purchased from Rodd, bookseller, Nov. 1830.
Vellum; ff. 41. 16th-17th cent. foliation 31-71 throughout. Sec. fol. 'I cured frere'. 16th-17th cent. foliation indicates that the text at that date was part of a larger volume. 258 x 165mm. Gatherings (five) of 8; f. 41 is a single leaf. Catchwords regular from f. 8v. Signatures in red, small letters a-e and arabic numerals 1-4, bottom right-hand corner recto. Signatures to quire iv also in black. Double columns. One cursive book-script throughout. Capitals, headings, signatures, etc., in red. Blue also used for capitals in list of chapters. Initials in red and blue penwork. ff. 1-2 stained and damaged, with loss of text. f. 41 stained.
