LOUIS MAIMBOURG: ISTORIA DELL’ARIANISMO; late 17th or early 18th cent. Italian translation. Louis Maimbourg, a French Jesuit historian (1610-1686), published Histoire de l’Arianisme (Paris, 1673). The present MS. contains an Italian translation of the 4th book, of the 12 books in the history, inc. ‘Se la vittoria di Costanzo’, expl. ‘Chiesa dei Santi Apostoli’. Book 4 covers the period A.D. 353-361 in the reign of Emperor Constantius II, a strong supporter of Arianism. It includes accounts of the Councils of Arles (353), Milan (355) and Sirmium (357), and of the double Council of Seleucia and Rimini (359). An English translation of Maimbourg’s work was published in two volumes by William Webster (1728-1729). Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '578' in pencil in top left corner of front fly-leaf. Purchased, together with Add. 8251, 8255, 8256, 8260, 8261, 8361 and 8512, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 578 (part).
