AD INSTITUTIONES CHRONOLOGICAS and DE DIIS QUORUM MENTIO FIT IN SCRIPTURIS; 1754. Latin. The first text in this MS., ‘Ad Institutiones Chronologicas’ (ff. 1-20v), has a preface on the use and necessity of chronology, followed by sections on historical divisions of time (ff. 3-5), the day and its divisions (ff. 5-9), the month (ff. 9v-13) and the year (ff. 13-20v), inc. ‘Quamvis animae humanae sit in deliciis oculos’, expl. ‘quum vero Aestivae feriae’. The second text, ‘De Diis Quorum Mention Fit in Scripturis’ (ff. 21-45v), contains references to various gods mentioned in the Old Testament, with descriptions of the gods and their worshippers. The gods are listed alphabetically, from Adad to Theraphim, inc. ‘Esse praestantem aliquam aeternamque naturam’, expl. ‘de Diis quorum mentio fit in scripturis’. Dated 6 May 1754 (f. 45v). Armorial bookplate of Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, on front pastedown. ‘L/16/B’ in pencil in upper left corner of bookplate. '578' cancelled, in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, but not apparently part of lot 578.
Paper; ff. 45. Contemporary pagination, in ink, ‘1-16’ (ff. 1-8v) and ‘1-49’ (ff. 21-45v). 213 x 155mm. Both texts are copied in the same hand. Horizontal catchwords on every page. Late 18th cent. quarter binding of brown leather with decorated paper covers.
