JOHANN RWYKTER: De Adamidarum Origine; 1604. Latin transl. Copy, 1690. An abridged universal history dedicated to Johann Adam von Bicken, Archbishop-Elector of Mainz (1601- Jan. 1604). The text is divided into three books (ff. 3, 12v, 34). It begins by describing Adam's descent and how Sem, Cham and Japheth, sons of Noah, generated three different races; it continues with the genealogies of the kings of subsequent kingdoms. Chapters IV-VI of the third book relate to the genealogy of the kingdoms of Denmark, Jutland and the Scandinavian peninsula, other chapters relate to the Longobard, Italian and European kingdoms to circa 1420. The text preserved in the present MS. is an anonymous Latin translation of the original German text. Title (f. 1) 'De Adamidarum origine' and (f. 2) 'Ioannis Rwykter Upsalensis / De Adamidarum Origine / Chronicon Genealogicum in tres libres distributum / Amplissimo Principi Ioanni Adamo Sacro Romano Impero Electore Archiepiscopo Moguntino dicatum anno Domini 1604 / Nunc vero a multi erroribus ... repurgatum ... / Ab Anonymo e lingua Germanica in latinitatem restitutum et cum nonnullis aliis exemplaribus mm.ss. fideliter comprobatum / Romae anno Domini 1690', inc. (f. 3) 'Jo. Rwykter Upsalensis / De Adamidarum Origine / Liber I / Difficillimum est in presenti calamitoso hoc saeculo', expl. (f. 49v) 'Jo. Carolus iste qui amplitudini Vestrae librum de Natura aevum dedicavit'. Stamp (f. 2) 'biblioth / h.f. / J770', probably from the Biblioteca Falconieri (identifiable with Falconieri MS. 40 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 4). Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '578' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8361 and 8512, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 578 (part).
Paper; ff. 49+xxi. Old pagination in ink '1-92' (ff. 3-49v), omitting ff. 14v-15. 183 x 131mm. With running titles; horizontal catchwords inconsistently on each leaf. One hand. Late 17th-early 18th cent. binding of full vellum.
