UNIVERSAL HISTORY; 1660. Italian. Copy, late 17th cent. Universal history from the Creation to 1660, ‘all’anno corrente’ (f. 245), entitled ‘Fioretti d’Istorie’ and divided into 17 chapters, each headed with the name of a different flower. The history is arranged in chronological order and the chapters cover the periods from the Creation to Noah (ff. 1-3v), to Abraham (ff. 4-6), to the birth of Moses (ff. 7-10), to Samuel (ff. 11-16), to the Babylonian empire (ff. 17-25v), to the Persian Empire (ff. 26-36), to the death of Philip II, King of Macedonia, in 336 B.C. (ff. 37-60v), from the accession of Alexander the Great to the defeat of Perseus, last king of Macedonia, in 168 B.C. (ff. 61-73v), to the birth of Christ (ff. 74-86v), to the death of Christ (ff. 87-94), to Diocletian (ff. 95-126v), from Constantine the Great to Zeno (ff. 127-154v), from Odoacer to Charlemagne (ff. 155-177), from Charlemagne to the Emperor Manuel Comenus (ff. 178-211), from Frederick Barbarossa to Henry IV of France (ff. 212-244v), from 1600, in the reign of Henry IV, to the Restoration of Charles II of England in 1660 (ff. 245-281v), inc. ‘Mirerai in questa Aiuola le Rose’, expl. ‘a quella celeste ed eterna pace’. ‘XXXIII’ in pencil in top left corner of f. 1, identifiable with Biblioteca Falconieri MS. 33 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 12. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. ‘521’ in pencil in top left corner of f. 1. Purchased, together with Add. 8257, 8258, 8761, 8762, 8808-8810, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 521 (part).
Paper; ff. 281. Contemporary pagination in ink '1-559'. 265 x 195mm (max. dimensions). Horizontal catchwords on every leaf. Margins ruled with folds. Guilford binding of quarter vellum with decorated paper covers over pasteboards.
