MISCELLANEOUS TRACTS on European and Italian history; circa 1577-1677. Italian, Latin and Spanish. Partly printed. Relates mostly to the rights of the Church to Italian states such as Ferrara, Modena, Comacchio, the investiture and the rights of the Boschetti family to the lands of S. Cesario on Panaro (Modena), their dispute with the Monastery of S. Pietro in Modena, and claims of France to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Including 17th-cent. transcripts (arts. 7-13) of charters and papal bulls dated 1135-1510, with related table of contents (f. 283). This table of contents and a note of dedication to Angelo Cesi, Bishop of Rimini (1627-1646), 'Ad Illustrissimum ... Cesium Ariminensem Episcopum Auctor presentem mittit librum' (f. 278), are possibly the table of contents and the frontispiece of the original MS. relating to the Boschetti family, incorporated now in the present MS. A MS. note on f. 207 records a message from King Charles II of Spain to his half-brother Don John of Austria, followed by a note in a different hand, which also added other MS. notes by on ff. 204v-205 and 224 (end of arts. 15 and 20); pen trials on ff. 538, 560-560v. Ownership note 'Ego Philippus Ficarellus' (f. 250) relating to the printed treatise of Christophe Balthazar, Trattato delle usurpationi de' Rè di Spagna... (art. 22, ff. 250-277). Stamp of the Colonna library 'Libraria Colonna' in red on ff. 1, 31, 277v, 475v, 560v; for the Colonna library stamp see Bragaglia, vol. iii, T 32: circa 1750. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. Purchased, together with Add. 8262, 8264-8281, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 284 (part).
