MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTION of tracts, relazioni, and papal instructions relating to the Papacy, Spain, Modena, Naples, and Cologne; circa 1556-1644. Italian and Latin. Copies, 17th cent. Partly printed (ff. 206-207). The MS. includes: - (a) speech on good government, allegedly from the Emperor Charles V to his son Philip, 1556 (ff. 1-46v): other copies in Add. 8331 (art. 10, ff. 278-404v; see description for reference to its English translation), 20045 (art. 3, ff. 265-337), and Royal 14.A.XXI (art. 2, ff. 6-108); - (b) relazione and tract relating to the pretensions of the Duke of Modena over papal territories, 1643 (ff. 47-54v, 55-124v): other copies of the tract in Add. 8304 (art. 9, ff. 115-184v), and 8392 (art. 9, ff. 280-326v); - (c) account of the Carafa war by Pietro de Nores, after 1644 (ff. 125-287v), of which other copies in Add. 8689, 10778 and 21961 (ff. 157-336v); - (d) anonymous tract relating to the Duke of Parma's protest against the seizure of Parma and Castro during the so-called war of Castro, 1641 (two copies, ff. 288-339, 340-373v, the first preceded by a letter); - (e) instructions of Cardinal Francesco Barberini to Cardinal Marzio Ginetti, appointed legatus a latere in 1635 to preside over the peace congress at Cologne, written by Ginetti's secretary Pietro Benessa, 1636 (ff. 374-554): other copies of the text in Add. 8299 (art. 5, ff. 97-167v, dated 1630), 8323 (art. 1, ff. 2-113v), 8732 (art. 1, ff. 2-194), and 8772 (art. 1, ff. 1-123v): see respective descriptions for bibliographical references; - (f) instructions to a prelate, relating to the government of the papal state (ff. 556-602v). The MS. also includes a map of the port of Ostia, near Rome, printed by Joannes Orlandi, 1602, 256 x 387mm (ff. 206v-207). Stamp of the Colonna library 'Libraria Colonna' in red on ff. 1, 72, 556, on recto of blank before f. 288; for the Colonna library stamp see Bragaglia, vol. iii, T 32: circa 1750. From the library of Cardinal Giuseppe Renato Imperiali, according to a note in Evans sale catalogue at lot 284. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. Purchased, together with Add. 8262-8263, 8265-8281, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 284 (part).
