COLLECTION of tracts, relazioni and original letters relating to Queen Christina of Sweden and her life in Rome; circa 1654-1698. Italian, Latin, and French. Partly autograph. The MS. contains autograph letters of Queen Christina (ff. 32, 64, 180-182), and of Cardinal Decio Azzolini the Younger, papal escort to the Queen (passim). It also includes (ff. 205-277v) a relazione of the journey to Rome of Queen Maria Casimira Sobiesky (1641-1716), daughter of Henri de la Grange, Marquis d'Arquien and Cardinal, and widow of King John III Sobieski of Poland. Table of contents (ff. 1-1v). 'D.V.6' and 'LXXVII' in pencil, and stamp 'biblioth / h.f. / J770' on f. i: identifiable with Falconieri MS. 77 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 26v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '290' in pencil at center of f. i. Purchased, together with Add. 8282-8284, 8286-8289, 8344, 8358, 8433, 8688, 8788, and possibly 8416, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 290 (part).
Paper; ff. 277+i, plus one unfoliated blank after ff. 1, 4, 30, 59, 64, 71, 76, 94, 103, 110, 111, 116, 121, 130, 133, 138, 145, 199, 203, four after f. 28, two after ff. 32, 176, 204. Old foliation in ink '1-302' (ff. 2-277), including blanks (with the exception of blank after f. 145), omitting ff. 44-45; two sets of older paginations in ink '1-11' (ff. 9-14), and '1-118' (ff. 205-263v). Composite volume. 282 x 208mm. Several Italian hands. Guilford binding of quarter vellum with decorated paper covers over pasteboards.
