MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTION of political tracts, letters, relazioni, and conclave accounts relating to Portugal, Turkey, the Papacy, France, the German Empire, Venice, Persia, Poland, and Tunisia; circa 1544-1576. Italian. Copies. The MS. includes (art. 10, ff. 334v-375v) a letter-book of Cardinal Angelo Niccolini, Archbishop of Pisa, relating to his promotion to cardinal in 1563. Table of contents (ff. 477-477v), added later. Old shelfmarks '285' in ink on outer margin of front pastedown, above an older, crossed out shelfmark '12' in ink, and 'CCLXXXV' in ink in sixth spine compartment: identifiable with Marefoschi MS. 285 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 25v. A note (f. 478) providing the nos. of other MSS. in the Marefoschi collection relating to Portugal; note (f. 479), bearing no date, referring to Monsignor Giovanni Francesco Marefoschi Compagnoni, cleric of the Apostolic Chamber and nephew of Cardinal Mario Marefoschi Compagnoni. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '512' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8709, 8710, 8711, 8712, 8713, and 8714, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 512 (part).
