COLLECTION of historical, religious and moral tracts, partly relating to Jansenism and the history of heresy in the Eastern Churches, with lists of Roman Emperors and other rulers, and a collection of inscriptions on Roman imperial coins; circa 1628-1690. Latin and Italian. Copies. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '155' in pencil in upper left corner of f. 1. Purchased, together with Add. 8292 (part), 8502, 8789, 8801, 8802, and 8804, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 155 (part). Contents as follows:

1. ff. 1-101. Collection of letters and tracts relating to the Catholic Church condemnation of the theories of Martin Luther (1483-1546), and Cornelius Jansen (1585-1638), Bishop of Ypres; after 1628. Latin. Copies. Inc. 'Epistola hortatoria Martini Lutheri ad Catharinam de Bois Monialem sive Preparatio ad Nuptias / Pax tecum, spiritus ubi vult'.

2. ff. 102-135v. Two tracts relating to the origin of heresies in the Eastern Church and to missionaries; n.d. Latin. Copies. Inc. (f. 102) 'De sectarum sive schismatum orientalium origine / A Nestorio Episcopo Constantinopolitano originem habent hereses orientales'; inc. (f. 122) 'Dubia missionariis scitu necessaria / An infideles sive subditi sive non subditi Christianis principibus cogi possint ad fidem'.

Abridged history of the Roman Emperors, the kings of Syria, Egypt, Bizantium, and Italy before Charlemagne, and the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, including (ff. 147-164) copies of imperial coin inscriptions; n.d. 4. ff. 176-223v, 224-308v. Two moral tracts by the Franciscan friar Lorenzo di San Lorenzo of the Convent of S. Maria in Aracoeli in Rome, later Cardinal Lorenzo Cozza (elected 1726); circa 1690. Latin. Copies. Inc. 'Disertationes morales de restitutione elaboratae per R.P. Laurentium a S. Laurentio in conventu S. Mariae in Aracoeli Rome, Sacri Theologiae lectorem generalem nec non cas... conscientiae explanantorem / Anno 1690 / Proemium / Inflix plane homo qui ambulans secundum desiderio cordis sui'; inc. Paper; ff. 308, divided into two volumes (vol. i: ff. 1-175; vol. ii: ff. 176-308), plus five unfoliated blanks after f. 101. Four sets of old pagination in ink '1-207' (ff. 1-101, omitting nos. 64-69), '1-68' (ff. 102-135v), '1-96' (ff. 176-223v), '1-168' (ff. 224-308, repeating no. 115). circa 223 x 165mm (mounted on paper guards). Three sets of alphabetical quire signatures in lower margin of first leaves: 'A-L' (ff. 1-135), 'A-D' (ff. 176-223), and 'A-G' (ff. 224-308); ff. 136-175 (art. 3) divided into three gatherings, with the first marked 'e'. Horizontal catchwords inconsistently on each page. One Italian hand.
