MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTION of historical papers; circa 1350-1631. Italian, Latin, and Spanish. Copies, 17th cent. The collection is separable into two parts. The first part (ff. 3-107v) relates to the Papacy and its relations with Savoy and other Italian states, France, the German Empire, Portugal, Scotland, England, and Spain from Paul III (1534-1549) to Paul V (1605-1621). It contains papal instructions to nuncios and other ambassadors between 1537 (art. 3) and 1616 (art. 1), including instructions to Latino Giovenale Manetti relating to Scotland (art. 4), and a relazione of England from Cardinal Reginald Pole to Pope Paul III (art. 5). The second part is a miscellany of historical papers, royal proclamations, relazioni, and letters relating to France, Flanders, Spain, Turkey, England, Naples, Milan, Ferrara, and Poland, including the proclamation against members of the Gunpowder Plot (art. 7), the proclamation of James I of England against catholic clerics (art. 8), a list of objections to the name of Great Britain (art. 9), a letter by Giovanni Garzia Millini expressing the concern of Philip III of Spain for the English Catholics (art. 11), a relazione of eruptions of Mount Vesuvio (art. 10), some letters of St. Catherine of Siena (art. 12), and a letter relating to the body of St. Francis of Assisi (art. 13). Table of contents (ff. 1-2v), added later. Old signatures '26' in black ink in lower left corner of front pastedown, and '392' in very faint ink on fifth spine compartment: identifiable with Mattei MS. 392 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 15v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '56 / P M' in pencil in lower edge. '378' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8343, 8514, 8532, 8715, 8716, 8717, 8764, and 38162, from R. H. Evans, 8 December 1830, lot 378 (part).

'Instruttione per Scotia al Signor Latino Juvenale alli 24 decembre 1538', instructions to Latino Giovenale Manetti appointed ambassador to King James V of Scotland (d. 1542) to announce the promotion to the Cardinalate of David Beaton, Bishop of Mirepoix and papal nuncio to France, 1538. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'In primis visitare il Re et la Regina e benedirli', expl. 'a proposito parlare della Decima e delli libri d'Anglia'. A letter from Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, papal Vice-Chancellor, to James V, desiring credence for Latino Juvenale as nuncio to Scotland, dated 23 Dec. 1538, in Latin, in Royal 18 B VI (art. 110, f. 52). Another undated instruction to Manetti relating to France in Add. 8268, ff. 1-2v.
5. ff. 91-95v. 'Instruttione sopra le cose d'Inghilterra del Cardinale Polo a Papa Paolo 3o', relazione of England from Cardinal Reginald Pole to Pope Paul III; circa 1534-1547. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'Padre Santo, se il servitio al quale Nostro Signore Dio mi facesse atto', expl. 'come sono obligatissimo di fare'. Not found in two collections of Pole's correspondence in Add. 41577 and 25425.
