The MS. includes: - (a) letters (f. 72) of King Philip II of Spain to Abbot and Count Sfondrati on the death of their father, the Spanish ambassador to Savoy, 1587, in Spanish; - (b) letters (ff. 73-74v, 80-81v) of Ferdinando I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, 1591 and 1601; - (c) letter (f. 76) of the Emperor Louis IV to the College of Cardinals, 1330, in Latin; - (d) letters (ff. 77-79) from the historian Paolo Giovio (1483-1552) to Benedetto Conversini, Bishop of Jesi, 1550-1552, marked by the note 'stampata' in upper left corner of f. 77; - (e) letter (ff. 86-88) of Cardinal Niccolò Sfondrati, Bishop of Cremona, afterwards Pope Gregory XIV, 1586; - (f) brief (ff. 91-92) of Pope Clement VIII to Offredo Offredi, Bishop of Molfetta and papal nuncio at Venice, 1603; - (g) letter (f. 100v) of King Philip III of Spain to Pope Paul V, 1606, in Spanish; - (h) letter (ff. 102-102v) of Pope Sixtus V to King Philip II of Spain, 1587. Table of contents (ff. 1-2v), added later. Old signatures: 'tomo XXXVIII' in brown ink on f. 3; 'Tomo XLI' in pencil in upper left corner of f. i, and '485' in very faint ink in fifth spine compartment: identifiable with Mattei MS. 485 (vol. 41 of 'Memorie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 23v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '103' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8295-8303, 8305-8314, from R.
