Old signatures 'Tomo 42' and '(486)' in pencil in a note on f. i (lower margin): identifiable with Mattei MS. 486 (vol. 42 of 'Memorie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 23v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '103' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8294, 8296-8303, 8305-8314, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 103 (part).

'Vita di Paolo IV / Libro III / Della Riforma, che procurò essendo Cardinale, con perseguitare gli Eretici, e difendere i dogmi e l'autorità della Santa Chiesa Romana', life of Pope Paul IV, third book (covering circa 1536-1549); n.d. Italian and Latin. Copy. Inc. 'Capitolo primo / Creato contra sua voglia Cardinale... / Mentre il Padre Don Giovanni Pietro stava in Venetia', expl. 'come narra il Tuano'. Text divided into seven chapters (ff. 2, 15, 25, 50, 62, 74, 77v).
2. ff. 82-88, 88v-103v. Memorial to the Theologians on behalf of King Philip II of Spain relating to the conduct of Pope Paul IV in Naples, followed by the opinion of Friar Melchor Cano; 1555. Italian translation from Spanish. Copy. Inc. (f. 82) 'Memoriale dato da parte di Sua Maestà alli Teologi, circa il procedere di Paolo IV sopra il Regno di Napoli / Il Stato delle cose della Chiesa', expl. 'che cosa circa questo si potria fare'; inc. (f. 88v) 'Parere di fra' Melchiore Cano sopra quello gli fu consultato per il Memoriale soprascritto / C. R. Maestà / Questo negotio, nel quale Vostra Maestà, desidera essere informata', expl. 'Di questo Convento di S. Paolo di Valladolid a 15 di novembre 1555'. 3. ff. 104v-115. 'Apologia del Santo Pontefice Paolo Quarto circa la calunniosa Relatione da Ministri di Spagna data da lui a Carlo V', copy of the trial of Cardinal Carlo Carafa; after Sept. 1559. Italian and Latin. Copy. Inc. 'Quando io seppi che nel registro delle scritture del fisco'.
4. ff. 116-129. 'Breve Relatione delli servitii fatti alla Serenissima Casa di Aragona et alla potentissima e sempre Augusta Casa d'Austria per la Casa delli Duchi et Conti di Matalona, Conti di Cerrito, et Marchesi d'Arienzo', relazione of the service given to the House of Aragon and Austria by the Dukes of Maddaloni, a branch of the Carafa family, concluding with Marzio II Carafa, Duke of Maddaloni, Count of Cerreto, and Marquis of Arienza; circa 1670s. Italian. Copy. Inc. (f. 117v) 'Gli servitii della Casa di Matalona sono tali e grandi', expl. 'con che cessò la sua carica'.
